Gold Coast Hens Party Ideas That Aren’t Cringe: 15 Actually Fun Things to Do
If the thought of penis straws, L-plates and forcing the bride to wear something embarrassing around Surfers Paradise makes you want to cancel the hens altogether… this one’s for you.
Don’t get me wrong — if your bride wants the full traditional hens experience, GO FOR IT. We are absolutely not here to judge. We’ve organised everything from beautiful wellness weekends to some seriously rogue hens parties, and both can be equally fun.
But one thing I’ve noticed from planning hens parties on the Gold Coast is that more and more girls are asking me the same thing:
“We want it to feel like a hens party… but we don’t want it to be cringe.”
And honestly, there are SO many ways to do that.
A hens doesn’t have to mean doing something the bride would normally hate just because it’s a hens. The best ones I’ve seen are basically an unreal girls’ day or weekend, just elevated a little because you’re celebrating someone getting married.
So if you’re looking for Gold Coast hens party ideas that are fun, modern and a little different, here are some of my favourites.
1. Hire a Private Boat for the Afternoon
I may be slightly biased here because we have our own boat, but I genuinely think a private boat party is one of the easiest hens activities to get right.
You have your own space, your own music, drinks, beautiful Gold Coast views and everyone can actually mingle rather than being stuck sitting at a table all afternoon.
And you can make a boat party as classy OR as chaotic as you want.
Keep it simple with grazing platters, champagne, cute outfits and a good playlist. Add a DJ if your group loves to dance. Add a topless waiter or show if the bride wants something cheekier. Check packages out here!
Or add absolutely nothing and just enjoy being on the water with your girls.
That’s what I love about it — there’s no set version of what a hens boat party has to look like.
2. Do a Pottery or Ceramic Painting Class
This is one of my favourite newer hens activities.
Grab some bubbles, sit around with the girls and paint your own ceramics while you chat. It’s relaxed enough that everyone can actually catch up, but you’re still doing something rather than just sitting at another restaurant.
It’s especially good if you’ve got a mixed-age group with mums, aunties, sisters and friends all coming.
And unlike a lot of hens party props that end up in the bin on Monday morning, you actually get something to keep afterwards. Plus its BYO!
3. Cocktail Making – But Make It Actually Good
Cocktail making is popular for a reason.
Everyone gets involved, nobody needs any particular skill and after a couple of cocktails the group tends to loosen up VERY quickly.
The cocktail classes we use on the Gold Coast are held in beautiful venues too, so it doesn’t feel like some awkward organised activity you’ve been forced into.
You learn a little, drink a lot, get plenty of photos and it works really well as the first proper activity before moving onto a boat, dinner or night out. Plus its such a picturesque space! Check it out!
4. Book a Bathhouse or Wellness Experience
Not every hens needs to start drinking at 10am.
In fact, some of my favourite itineraries now have a wellness element somewhere in the weekend.
You could make this the main hens activity for a bride who isn’t a huge partier, OR use it as your Sunday recovery session after absolutely not following my advice about taking it easy the night before.
Both work.
5. Do a Luxury Picnic
This is such a pretty option without requiring the bridesmaids to spend six hours DIYing a Pinterest picnic themselves. Take a look here!
Get it professionally set up, choose a beautiful Gold Coast location, add grazing food and champagne and just turn up.
You can dress it up as much as you want with a colour theme or keep it really simple.
It’s also a good option if you want something where everyone can actually talk — especially when half the hens group haven’t met before.
6. Try a Hat Burning Workshop
This is definitely one of the more unusual hens party ideas on the Gold Coast.
You choose and customise your own hat using burning techniques, branding, ribbons and accessories while having drinks with the girls.
It’s creative without feeling like you’re back in Year 8 art class, and everyone leaves with something completely different.
7. Have a Drag Queen Host the Party
Now THIS can go either direction.
A great drag queen can take a fairly normal cocktail party and completely change the energy.
Games, performances, a little roasting of the bride, plenty of interaction and usually a lot of laughing.
We’ve organised drag queens to come into private venues and join cocktail parties, and it works particularly well because you still have the nice venue, cocktails and girls’ afternoon — you’ve just added some chaos into the middle of it.
It’s cheeky without necessarily going full traditional hens.
8. Book Mobile Pilates at Your Accommodation
Hear me out.
Cute matching activewear. Pilates at your accommodation. Coffee or juices afterwards. Shower. Then straight into the afternoon activities.
For a wellness-loving bride, this is SUCH a nice way to start the day.
It’s also perfect for a full hens weekend because not every activity needs to involve alcohol.
And yes, you can absolutely do Pilates in the morning and be drinking cocktails on a boat six hours later. Balance.
9. Have Your Tarot Cards Read
This one is so fun for smaller groups.
Get a tarot reader to come to your accommodation and do readings for the girls while everyone hangs out, drinks and gets ready.
It works particularly well as a little extra activity rather than the whole event.
And even the girls who swear they don’t believe in any of it suddenly become VERY interested when it’s their turn.
10. Make Candles or Turkish Mosaic Lamps
If your bride is more crafty than clubby, there are some genuinely beautiful workshops around the Gold Coast now.
Candle making is an easy crowd pleaser, while Turkish mosaic lamp making is something a little more unusual.
These are great for groups wanting an activity during the day before getting dressed up and heading somewhere for dinner and drinks afterwards.
You don’t have to choose between wholesome hens and party hens either.
Do crafts at 1pm and make questionable decisions at 10pm. No one is stopping you.
11. Do a Bottomless Brunch
Is bottomless brunch groundbreaking? No.
Is sitting around eating good food and drinking endless cocktails with your best friends still an excellent way to start a hens day? Absolutely.
The trick is what you pair it with.
Instead of making brunch the entire event, use it as the start of the day before heading onto something else — a boat party, party bus, beach club, cocktail class or another activity.
Just give yourselves enough time between bookings.
Trust me on this one.
Trying to get 18 girls who are three mimosas deep to leave a bottomless brunch, go to the bathroom, find their bags and get into transport takes longer than you think.
12. Hire a Mobile Bartender
If you’ve booked a beautiful apartment or accommodation for the weekend, sometimes you don’t need to immediately leave it.
Get everyone dressed up, put some music on and have a bartender come to you.
It takes pre-drinks from everyone standing around a kitchen bench with a bottle of prosecco to an actual part of the hens.
You can also combine this with a grazing table, games, tarot reader, drag queen or entertainment before heading out later.
13. Do Life Drawing – Without Making It Weird
Life drawing can actually be hilarious with the right group.
It’s cheeky enough to remind everyone that yes, we ARE at a hens party, but there’s also an activity involved so you’re not just awkwardly staring at a naked man.
Add drinks, terrible artistic ability and a group of competitive friends and you’re pretty much sorted.
This is particularly good for brides who want something traditionally hens-ish without committing to a full male show.
14. Get a Party Bus Instead of an Uber
Transport is one of the most overlooked parts of planning a hens party.
You’ve spent months organising everything and then suddenly 17 girls are standing outside trying to order five separate Ubers.
No thank you.
If you’re moving between activities, turn the transport INTO an activity.
Get a party bus, bring drinks where permitted, connect your playlist and have an hour of dancing and carrying on while you’re getting to the next location anyway.
It’s practical and fun, which is basically my favourite combination when planning events.
15. Build the Hens Around the Bride – Not What a Hens “Should” Be
This is probably my biggest piece of advice.
Forget what you think you’re supposed to do at a hens party.
If your bride would rather do Pilates, paint pottery, have a beautiful lunch and be home by 9pm — plan that.
If she wants cocktails, a boat, topless waiters and to end up dancing in Surfers until 3am — plan that.
If she wants both? Even better.
The best hens parties I’ve seen aren’t necessarily the biggest or most expensive ones. They’re the ones where you can tell someone has actually thought about the bride.
So, What Makes a Hens Party Feel “Not Cringe”?
Honestly?
Don’t force it.
You don’t need twelve activities. You don’t need to fill every minute of the day. You don’t need every decoration on Pinterest. And you definitely don’t need to choose an activity purely because Google told you it’s what people do at hens parties.
Pick two or three really good things that suit your group and leave enough time to actually enjoy them.
For example:
The Classy One:
Luxury picnic → cocktails → private boat at sunset → dinner
The Wellness One:
Mobile Pilates → brunch → bathhouse → nice dinner and cocktails
The Creative One:
Pottery painting → cocktail making → party bus → night out
The Party One:
Bottomless brunch → party bus → private boat + topless waiter → Surfers Paradise
The Best of Both Worlds:
Bathhouse → get ready at the accommodation → cocktail making → boat party → wherever the night takes you
That’s a hens party I’d actually want to go to.
Planning a Hens Party on the Gold Coast?
The Gold Coast is honestly one of the easiest places to create a hens weekend because you don’t have to choose between beachy, classy, wellness, creative and full-blown party.
You can have all of them in the same weekend.
At Rani Hens Parties, that’s basically what I do — you tell me about your bride, your group, budget and the sort of weekend you’re imagining and I’ll help piece together activities that actually work together.
I’m Gold Coast based and I personally look into the activities and suppliers we recommend. I also think about all the boring-but-important stuff like locations, travel time and whether you’re realistically going to get 20 girls from one booking to another in 15 minutes.
Because the hens organiser should actually get to enjoy the weekend too.
So if you’re planning a Gold Coast hens party and have absolutely no idea where to start, send through your group size, date, approximate budget and a little bit about your bride.
We’ll take it from there.
